Buying safely in the twin cities
Rawalpindi's gem bazaars in Saddar and Raja Bazaar are among the most active in the country and a mixed bag of quality. Three rules keep you safe anywhere:
- Daylight, loupe, price. Look at the stone by a window with a 10x loupe, and compare the price with the ranges in our Gemstone Buying Guide.
- Treatment in writing. Heated sapphire and lightly oiled emerald are normal; glass-filled ruby and dyed turquoise are not, at natural prices.
- A certificate that says "natural". A good report states species, natural origin and treatment. For stones above Rs 30,000, ask for an independent laboratory report — see Authenticity & Trust.
